Transition SE South will move to the community room at Kailash Ecovillage for our Thursday, February 11 meeting. The Ecovillage is located at 4311 SE 37th Ave, between Gladstone and Holgate, and the community room is downstairs on the street side.
We will start at 6:30 with a potluck, vegan food only please, and start our program at 7:15-7:30.
Ecovillage founders Ole and Maitri Ersson were the first individuals to receive a City of Portland rainwater harvesting permit. Using a 1500 gallon cistern and other simple plumbing components they were able to supply their SE Portland home on rainwater harvested from the roof. In this presentation, Ole will describe his home system and another in an off the grid cabin in the hills of SW Portland. Those unable to attend the presentation can see a description of these systems on their web page, http://kailashecovillage.com/experiments/.
Ole will also give a short presentation on Kailash Ecovillage, which, unlike many cohousing communities, uses a rental model. They are creating a community promoting sustainable practices such as extensive recycling, organic gardening and composting, permaculture, bicycle and public transportation use, vehicle sharing, and rainwater and solar harvesting.
Finally, Steve Couche will tell us about the SE Portland Tool Library, planned to open in May.
Transition SE South aims to bring the Transition message of building community resilience against climate change, rising energy costs and economic decline to the Southeast neighborhoods south of Powell and west of 82nd. We meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month, ordinarily at Trinity United Methodist Church at SE 39th and Steele.
