Earth Day 2010
Re-Seeding Our World!
Saturday April 24th from 10am to 7pm
Washington High School Field (SE 12th and Stark)
Earth Day 2010 will be engaging all of Portland, especially the Buckman Neighborhood, in the annual Celebration of Localization. Earth Day is a project of City Repair and is proud to organize this event for the eleventh year in a row! This year’s theme, Re-Seeding Our World will focus on how we all can positively contribute to creating the world we want. A world with an infrastructure that is sustainable, community focused, empowering to its citizens, respectful of the natural world and provides places for people to gather.
Booths: Booths are an educational smorgasbord for those in attendance at Earth Day and a great opportunity for public exposure for local sustainable businesses and non profit organizations working to make the world a better place. Click here to fill out your application: Booth Registration is now closed
Volunteer Opportunities: Earth Day is an all-volunteer run event and we need you to help us make this year a success. • Interactive Art Activities: As part of this year’s earth day festival we ask you, all of you, to join us in building a huge paper mache sculpture of a heart, the symbol which stands at the center of city repair, and the center of the festival grounds. This project is a celebration of the power of many hands working together. We will transform an array of discarded materials- old news, and cereal-less boxes- into love. It is our hope that in the simplicity and silliness of this endeavor we will feel united and aware of the power we possess to enact joyful transformations together. There will also be kids art projects in the Sprout Village – one will be making paper mache seed balls that kids can take home with them and plant in the ground and another project will be making flags using recycled fabric that we are collecting and live painting happening all day!
• Over 115 Booths: Tryon Life Community Farm will be bringing some chickens in a chicken tractor, some herbs from the land, and (weather permitting) will be inviting you all to make cob and building cob sculptures with them. Click Link to view participating Organizations for Earth Day 2010 Event.
•Sustainably designed celebration: The power for the entertainment will be powered by solar energy, courtesy of the Portland Bureau of Transportation and Thomas M. Ullmann, LME. The Hybrid (Sun & Wind) Renewable Energy Power Trailer will provide energy for the Acoustical Stage, the latest project to come out of Tom’s Renewable Energy Laboratory in Milwaukie is a 10,000 watt Inverted Energy @ 220 Volts being replenished from the 600 watts Photovoltaic Electrical Panels and a 10 bladed 400 watts Wind Turbine Generator to keep the Green Power of energy flowing to the stage. The New Design Features of this portable Hybrid Renewable Energy Power Trailer is it’s Drop & Go ability and the small Foot Print of this 4′ x 6′ trailer for easy placement for public events, temporary utility service , and remote power. With additional features of WiFi repeaters, Video Camera, Lighting, and PA system being offered at this time and the Security of being Self-Contained in a Lockable Enclosure. Send all Inquires for this Hybrid Renewable Energy Power Trailer to: TMU4SOLAR@aol.com
We are also working really hard behind the scenes to set up a comprehensive recycling system to ensure that the event will be as close to a zero waste event as possible.
• Community Engagement: Bicycles for Humanity will be collecting bikes at Earth Day from 10am to 4pm to send to school children in South Africa. They are looking for used (but in good condition) mountain bikes, cruisers, parts, tools, bike accessories, and monetary donations. All donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. Various raffle prizes and treats await good-hearted donors along with the profound feeling of donating sustainable transportation to school children. Come drop off donations at the shipping container at SE 14th and Alder. Please contact Jenny at jennymleonard@gmail.com if you have any questions. For more information.
• Workshops led by Community Organizers: Sowing the Seeds of Social Change (11am – 1pm) Facilitated by Teryani Riggs of the Living Awareness Institute. Hierarchy, patriarchy, and imperialism have been some of the keys players in our current social and ecological distress. This workshop not only explores how we unconsciously perpetuate these systems of domination, but also creative ways to create a societal shift both locally and globally to better foster a shared-power world. Please note: this is a highly active and interactive workshop. Please come prepared to play, think deeply, and have fun.
